Watch the difference between the two versions of this athlete’s actions. The first version is what we commonly see for a starter Clearhip or circle opening action on bars. It shows up on sets for saltos on floor sometimes. It is a pulling action where they are trying to actively pull their arms away but they maintain too much of a connection between their elbows and rib cage.
We want to see the second and third examples shown here, where the gymnast rounds and actively pushes the elbows and ribs away from each other. You can see the body tension is much better, the arm angle is more open.
This drill is a pretty good way to make them feel the difference between the pull and the push/ the connection and the separation.
Hope this helps you and your athletes create their Best Darn Gymnastics!
