Slider Kips

Slider Kips!!!

Some of our kids are not doing flat enough hips on the downswing out of skills or between kips in a row. There is a tendency to pike early and lift feet to the bar right away. We are using this drill to work flatter hips longer before initiating our glide action through the bottom. The goal is to keep the slider on the mat for a significant portion of the drop. Then the normal kip mechanics apply!
We are using the @tumbltrak big slider and it works very well for this drill.

This athlete does show a great stretch forward on her glide. She has a little bit of soft knees on the initial snap of the toes to the bar. Also doesn’t quite shift her wrists as strong as we would ideally like and slightly extends her hips as she is completing her kip. I did not instruct her to cast out of this, so she wasn’t trying to go to her best load position, but we do usually encourage all kips to finish in their best loaded position for casting. Habits are created through repetition, either good or bad. Always try to rep the action you ideally want. So this is a good example but certainly there is some room for improvement to make it the best example. Luckily this gymnast gets it and knows she just needs to keep working hard and it will all come together!

Hope this helps you and your athletes create their Best Darn Gymnastics!
