This is a fun and cool way to introduce the mechanics of twisting to your kids coming up in your programs. It can of course also be a way to reinvest in some technique and quality with your upper level athletes as well.
You’ll see the gymnast lays down with their body longwise on the block. The edge of their shoulder and hip should be hanging off the edge of the mat ever so slightly. Athlete leads their first shoulder open and moves the chin to look down that arm towards their twist direction. Once they begin to fall and feel the momentum start to gain on the fall and twist, they wrap their outside arm across the chest to accelerate the twist. This really works all the right mechanics of twisting, the slight initiation with the leading shoulder, the acceleration of the second arm across center, the head position looking towards the twist direction shoulder, and body tension to maximize the efficiency of the whole action.
We love it! Hope you do too!
May this benefit you and your athletes on their way to creating the Best Darn Gymnastics!
