This set-up with foam blocks offers some great feedback to your gymnasts. You will see this athlete brings her first(left) hand a little wide coming off the panel mat. She knocks the block off the side which gives her feedback for her to focus on keeping everything in alignment throughout the exercise. This athlete has had some trouble fighting the habit of overturning her hands in cartwheels and roundoffs.
You see the whole of the drill includes a block for the back knee to make sure the gymnast bends and loads the back leg to create power. She actually pushes the back panel mat a little on her initial kick from the ground as a way to practice pushing from that back leg. One hand goes between each pair of blocks to keep a 1-2 placement of the hands. The finish position is a rounded chest curl position falling back to a resi to simulate the backward momentum required to create quality back tumbling acceleration.
Hope this helps you and your athletes create their Best Darn Gymnastics!
