Teaching Beginner Flip Shaping

“Every flip in gymnastics ideally starts with a layout before changing shape to accelerate (if necessary).” We have been using the traditional Straight arm backward roll to push up position but having our kids tuck the very end and land on flat shins. This is to help them recognize the layout start and the transition to the tuck shape in front of them and on the back half of the skill. Doing it late makes sure they understand that layout start and also gives then the ability to only tuck the necessary amount to get the rotation to finish underneath them correctly. Early tuck might accelerate too much and then they need to get a perfect kick out. Late tuck allows them to gauge their flip height and rotation and only put in what the need for the shape change.

Hope this helps you and your athletes create their Best Darn Gymnastics!
